What's Up Front!

HW Wilson And EBSCOHost

As many of you know, last year HW Wilson and EBSCO merged. One of the results of this merger was that all Wilson databases have been rolled over to the EBSCOhost platform. When you open the Wilson databases on POWER Library they open in the EBSCOhost interface. In order to make this transition a little easier, below are helpful tips in using the new interface:

  • The Wilson Web interface contained a physical description drop down box that allowed users to limit searches by description type. (i.e. graphs, chart, mat, etc.). EBSCOhost uses limiters as part of the Quick View in the results screens. Field Codes can also be used to search for a particular type of document when performing searches. The list of field codes is available in the help section of all EBSCOhost databases.
  • Wilson web provided tools for printing, emailing, saving, citing an exporting articles. In additional to all the tools that Wilson offered, the new EBSCOhost interface allows users to create notes and bookmark articles.
  • Full-text articles can be translated into 29 languages. This option has been increased from the 13 available as part of the Wilson Web interface.
  • The interface itself can now also be translated into one of 28 languages. This is an increase from the 6 that were available in the Wilson Web Interface.

Keep in mind that any folders created using the Wilson Web interface are gone. Please see My EBSCOhost Folder and Account Help Sheet for instructions on creating new folders.

Access PA Database Interlibrary Loan Request Form

As librarians, we all know how important it is to protect the privacy of our patrons. Towards that end, here are a few tips to keep in mind when completing the Access PA Database Interlibrary Loan Request form:

  1. Enter all of the information necessary to contact a patron in the Patron Name box only. All of the information entered in the Patron Name box automatically transfers to the Patron Details section of the VDX ILL system Details page for ILL requests placed by your library. Potential responders are not able to view patron information on the Details page of a Responder request.
  2. Information entered in the Access PA Database Interlibrary Loan Request form Notes box will automatically be transferred to all potential responders that make up the Rota for ILL requests. The Notes box should be used to enter information that needs to be conveyed to potential responders such as citation information for a journal request and/or additional information pertaining to a request, ie: large print only.

Following these simple guidelines will insure the privacy of your patrons and help potential responders to ship requested items to you.

Reminder: Class Visits to Ask Here PA

To all PA School Librarians: We hope you have found Ask Here PA a valuable resource for your students! The staff of Ask Here PA has enjoyed working with them.

To better serve you, please notify us when you, or a teacher in your school, plan to have a group or class visit on Ask Here PA. We will try to add appropriate staff for the increased demand. Also, please do not have more than 12 students at a time logon to use Ask Here PA. If you have more than 12 students, please have students work in pairs or have them stagger their logon times by at least 15 minutes so that librarians have the time to provide the best service possible to each student. Also, if this will be the students' first time using Ask Here PA, please have them prepared with a question for the librarians staffing the service.

Please pass this information to the teachers that use Ask Here PA! Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

VDX ILL System Work Queue - End of Rota

Requests that have been sent to all locations in the Rota -- with no location indicating the item will be shipped -- are automatically placed in the "End of rota" column on the Borrower's side on the VDX ILL system Work Queue, indicating they are in the status of Not Supplied and must be completed and requested again if still needed.

There are two ways to check for requests in the status of Not Supplied, as follows:

  1. Log into VDX.
  2. Click on the Work Queue button along the top of the ILL Request Search screen.
  3. Click on the total next to End of Rota under Borrower.

OR:

  1. Log into VDX.
  2. Along the left-hand side of the ILL Request Search screen, select Requester only under Your Library's Role.
  3. Along the right-hand side of the ILL Request Search screen, change the Status box to Not Supplied and click the Search button.

Instructions for completing Not Supplied requests, along with illustrations, are available at:

That's it for this week. The News is published on a weekly basis from September through May, with special reports as necessary at other times.

Although we consolidate the source lists in an attempt to eliminate duplication, the process cannot distinguish address variants. We regret this, but ask that you just delete the duplicates.
